There were calla lilies. I didn't even know I liked calla lilies until I saw them at Whole Foods and thought it would be amusing to have a vase of them. Now I love them, they're so over the top.
There was pâté. Rex made two pounds of a chicken liver pâté, a dear friend made a country pork pâté, pictured below. Both were beyond delish.
There were people, lots of people, including a contingent of friends I've known since 1986. Yes, my darlings, I am quite elderly, don't let the hot pink heels fool you.
Unbeknownst to me, at the time, there were cracker ears. Sadly, there were no fake eyelashes, as I tragically ran out of the time necessary for such frivolities. I blame the tantrumriffic Younger Child.
There was also décolletage.
There was a costume change! I'm so glad the bearer of the cracker ears talked me into doing it. I'm told the shimmying sequins were hypnotizing
There was so much dancing I had to remove my heels. Others were happy to take them on. What, your parties don't feature energetic men strutting in heels?
It was an excellent party, the perfect way to begin a new decade.
Happy birthday! The party and both(!) dresses look wonderful. As do the shoes, though I suspect they'd induce vertigo in me. (Oh, and I had Calla lilies as my wedding bouquet. I was bullied into their elegance by the florist, having leaned towards a vulgar display of colour myself).

Happy birthday! You are gorgeous, as I suspected. Everyone cool is turning 40 this year.
I love the dress(es) and the shoes. This is really the way to celebrate the-milestone-birthday, though I suspect I'll be curled up under the covers or some such thing. Or in Europe. Which is my first choice. We shall see.
Sending much bday happiness your way ;)
